John, who is believed to have been in his late 60’s, joined P&O in the 1970’s as Restaurant staff and sailed in Oriana (1) as a Section Waiter. He then transferred to Princess Cruises, initially as a Public Room Steward and then as a Bartender. He remained with Princess Cruises until his retirement.

Ian was an Engineer Officer with P&O who spent many years as Chief Engineer Officer of Canberra.

John Children – died 18 November 2014 aged 84
John retired from P&O Princess in 1993 as Management Accountant, having originally joined the Orient Line in 1950.

Jane Hobbs (Shepherd) – died 2 November 2014 aged 75
Jane was an Assistant Purser with P&O in the early 1960’s, sailing in Orcades and Chusan where she met her late husband, Chris Hobbs, who was also an Assistant Purser.

Ken Hobbs – died 25 October 2014 aged 87
Ken joined BI in 1948 and eventually rose to be Chief Engineer Officer of Nevasa and Uganda in the 1960’s and early 1970’s when these ships were operating Educational Cruises. After these two ships became part of P&O Passenger Division in 1971, Ken transferred to Princess Cruises to become Chief Engineer Officer of Sun Princess and retired in 1987 as Commodore Chief Engineer Officer of P&O Princess.

Basil Hugh Staniland – died 17 October 2014 in Sydney aged 98
Basil Staniland was originally with the Orient Line in Sydney before becoming the Branch Manager of the Perth Office in 1956. Later he returned to Sydney to become a Director of P&O Orient Lines and a Director of P&O Australia.

Lauria Miles (Gibson) – died 17 October 2014
Lauria was a Stenographer/Woman Assistant Purser with P&O in Chusan and Iberia from 1960 to 1961.

Pat Craig was a Children’s Hostess with the Orient Line who sailed in Orsova in 1960 but left two years later to continue her teaching career.

Douglas Williams BEM – died 12 September 2014 aged 87
Douglas was a Bars Manager whose career with the Orient Line, and later with P&O, spanned 43 years.

Ian Minchin – died 24 June 2014 aged 76
Ian was an Assistant Purser with the Orient Line in the 1950’s and later spent a period working in the Orient Line office in Adelaide before returning to live in UK.

Geoff Seddon – died 6 June 2014 in Vancouver aged 69
Geoff joined the New Zealand Shipping Co. as an Engineer Officer in 1966 and after that Company became part of P&O General Cargo Division in 1971, he transferred to P&O Cruises. After settling ashore in Vancouver in 1977, he initially had his own marine consultancy before joining Transport Canada as a Marine Surveyor until his retirement in 2009.

“Fred the Bread” as he was affectionately known to his shipboard colleagues, was a Chief Baker with P&O.

Thelma was an Assistant Purser with the Orient Line, sailing in Orsova in the late 1950’s.

Ralph was with P&O Cruises as an Executive Chef from 1996 to 2005.

Lisa was with P&O as a Social Hostess and Entertainment Officer from 1972 to 1979.

Dr Rodney Leach – died 23 March 2014 aged 82
Dr Leach joined the P&O Group in 1971 from McKinsey & Co. as Head of the Ferries and Road Haulage Division, before becoming Head of P&O Passenger Division (P&O Cruises). In 1985 he left to become Chief Executive Officer of the Vickers Shipyard at Barrow-in-Furness and Cammel Laird in Birkenhead/Liverpool.

Tony Martin – died 16 March 2014 in the USA aged 71
Tony joined P&O in 1972 as an Entertainment Officer and rose to become a Cruise Director with Princess Cruises. He left in the late 1970’s and remained in the USA.

Peter Austin – died 1 January 2014 aged 92
Peter attended HMS Conway before joining P&O as a Deck Cadet, but was forced to leave the sea due to ill health during his first voyage. He then became involved in the Brewing industry through his family and spent the rest of his working life setting up breweries around the world. In total, he built some 140 breweries in 17 countries.
